Sampson State Park encompasses nearly 2,000 acres, including just over 5.5 miles of lakefront, providing beautiful scenic views and abundant recreational opportunities. Centrally located in the Finger Lakes Park Region, Sampson State Park slopes gently above the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. Formed over 12,000 years ago, Seneca Lake is the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes, with charted depths over 630 feet. Seneca Lake is famous for its lake trout fishing, with an annual National Lake Trout Derby held on Memorial Day weekend.

Geography:

Located in the Finger Lakes region, Sampson State Park was a naval training station from 1942-1946 and an Air Force base until 1960, when the U.S. Air Force transferred the land to the state of New York. Military roads and buildings have been replaced with grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees on flat, rolling woodlands, surrounding ravines. The park's military history has been preserved at at military museum established by Navy and Air Force veterans in the original base brig (jail) facility.

Recreation:

The park offers many recreational opportunities to suit the diverse needs of our guests. Visitors may enjoy swimming at the beach, boating or fishing. The old roads, lake trail and wooded areas offer ample opportunities for bicycling, walking, hiking, geocaching or nature watching. The park also features ball fields, tennis, horseshoe, volleyball and basketball courts, and a large modern playground. Bicycle rental and sports equipment sign out are available. A large indoor recreation hall features video games, billiards, table tennis and foosball. Organized interpretive activities are schedule throughout the season.

Facilities:

The parks boasts 243 electric campsites located in five wooded camping loops each with its own shower/restroom facility. The newly remodeled marina has 96 boat slips, a large multiple launch site and gas pumps. Also available at the park is a restaurant/camp store; and picnic areas with grills and tables. The park's facilities are almost entirely accessible to disabled visitors. Household pets are permitted with restrictions. Firewood and ice are available in the park and nearby.

Nearby Attractions:

Nearby attractions include Watkins Glen State Park, Lodi Point State Park, Seneca Lake State Park, Taughannock Falls State Park, and Bonavista State Park Golf Course. Seneca County is the heart of the Finger Lakes wine region, so park visitors can enjoy the Seneca and Cayuga Lake Wine Trails, as well as many historical points of interest in nearby towns and villages.

Sampson State Park and Seneca White Deer are partnering to provide tours of the former Seneca Army Depot. Come experience the white deer and the military history. www.senecawhitedeer.org
