Description

Thompson's Lake State Park, nestled in the mountains just four miles from the Helderberg Escarpment, is a popular campground and recreation area. In addition to its wooded campsites, the park features a sandy beach, mixed hardwood and conifer forests, limestone outcroppings, and open fields. Recreational opportunities include a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a playing field, swing sets, carry-in boat access, rental rowboats, fishing areas, and nature trails. Interpretive and recreational programs are offered for campers throughout the summer. During the winter, visitors can cross-country ski and ice fish.

Thompson's Lake State Park is located 18 miles southwest of Albany.

Recreation:

Beach swimming, boating, fishing (and wintertime ice fishing) park-organized recreation activities, hiking, picnicking, and wintertime cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are the park's major activities. The Emma Treadwell Thacher Center is located on Thompson's Lake next to the campground and is accessible to campers. The center opened in July 2001 and offers exhibits, interactive displays, trails for hiking and skiing, and educational programs.

Facilities:

Boat launch sites, boat rentals, campsites, dumping stations, a nature trail, picnic tables, a playground, playing fields, and showers are among the amenities available to park visitors.

Alerts and Important Information

Swimming beach is open weekends only from Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through the 4th Sunday in June. After that, the swimming beach is open Thursday through Monday until Labor Day; closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

To insure fairness for all NY customers, any reservation with departure dates outside the 9-month Maximum Window can not be changed or cancelled until 18 days after the reservation was made.

  • Pets must have proof of current rabies vaccination. Pets also must be leashed and attended to at all times.
  • Maximum of 2 vehicles allowed per site. Additional cars will be charged a fee.
  • Campers arriving after 9 p.m. are asked to call the park or risk losing the reservation. Quiet hours are observed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Any visitors must leave the park by 10 p.m.
  • Please do not use bathroom sinks or water outlets to clean cooking utensils.
  • Rowboat rentals are $8.00 per hour or $25.00 per day. They can be rented from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Paddleboat rentals are $5.00 per half hour. They can be rented from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The registrant must be at least 18 years old. Any children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Beer kegs and other bulk alcohol containers are allowed by permit only.
  • Generator use allowable hours: 9am - 11am and 5pm – 9pm.
  • Firearms, fireworks, chainsaws and subletting are not allowed at the park.

    Peak season: A person may be the primary site occupant for 14 total days of camping within a 16 day period. S/he must leave the park for 48 hours once they have stayed the maximum number of days allowed before beginning a new reservation.
