Overview

Description

Situated in a stand of white pine and northern hardwoods on the Sacandaga River, the serene Sacandaga Campground offers excellent fishing and hiking on nearby state lands. The east and west branches of the Sacandaga River meet at the campground, contributing to the splendid scenery. Geography: The Sacandaga Campground is located in the southern portion of the Adirondack Park, on the Sacandaga River. The area is basically flat, at an elevation of 925 feet above sea level. Recreation: During periods of high or "white" water, usually in the spring, the river is used by kayakers and canoeists between the Hamlets of Wells and Northville. There is a boat launch, as well as boating and canoeing, on Algonquin Lake. Fishing is popular. Hikers will want to visit Auger Falls, located approximately 10 miles north of the campground on Route 30 and known for its beauty. A relatively easy hike of 1.5 miles brings you to the falls. The Northville-Lake Placid Trail, a 133-mile-long hiking trail, is also nearby. The campground offers a Junior Naturalist Program, a nature based program that encourages children to explore the surrounding environment. Facilities: The park's amenities include campsites, a picnic area with tables and fireplaces, restrooms with showers, a trailer dump station, a boat launch (on the back side of Algonquin Lake), a recycling center, and a pay telephone. Most facilities are handicapped-accessible. Nearby Attractions: Shopping, restaurants, movie theaters, and golf courses are nearby.
